"What Do You Think of When You Hear
the Term 'Heart'?"

What do you think of when you hear the term heart? Do you think of love, romance, or even a cardiologist? These things all come to mind and what do you think it has to do with success? Does it have any relationship to success? I think it does; in fact, I know it does! Have you ever heard the term heart as it pertains to athletics? That definition has the most relevance to success and a great example is that of the cyclist Lance Armstrong.
Lance was a world class cyclist and had a fantastic career going until one day he was diagnosed with cancer, the type of thing that was both career threatening and even life threatening. Lance could have thrown in the towel and taken what life threw at him but he had a different plan in mind. Lance was a fighter and he was determined to not only beat cancer but also return to competitive cycling. This he did and he went on, after great trials and tribulations, to win six consecutive Tour de France events, the most prestigious cycling event in the world.

Was it just pure athletic ability or determination that drove Lance to these heights, when everything seemed to suggest otherwise? Those things sure helped. There was that extra little something, though, and that thing was heart. What we call heart others might call courage or resolve and it is different from just pure determination.

The difference is that determination can occur with most anyone, no matter what situation they may be in. Heart has to do with how you face adversity, how you handle situations in which many others might fail. It is the undying refusal to fail and determination to succeed that goes right to your very core.

Does this sound like an attribute that you have? Have you ever been in situations of adversity where you had to dig deep to make things work? I’m sure most of us have at some point and we can learn a lot about ourselves when these things come up in our lives. We Learn that we can endure! We know what it takes ! We can draw upon this extra something more often than we have in the past. The key now is to just look at success as just another major challenge and use that to draw out the very best in you !
