Masterminding: Surround Yourself With Success to Discover It for Yourself

What does the term ‘masterminding’ mean to you? Do you think of a group of success minded people who meet and feed off each other’s ideas and energy?

Yes, the mastermind group is the entrepreneur’s version of the corporate think tank. New ideas are bounced around, existing ones are reanalyzed, and ‘out of the box’ thinking can occur in a supportive environment. You may not be overly familiar with the idea of a mastermind group. The idea here is for you to become familiar with them so you can either become part of one or perhaps even start one of your own!

First, you must see what masterminding can do for you and your pursuit of success. Even though there’s no required structure for what a mastermind group should look like, here are some common traits:

1) Regular meetings among members

2) Support of new ideas from all participants

3) Positive feedback and constructive criticism for ideas that are generated

4) No one member benefits more from the group than another

5) Members hold each other accountable for progress on their respective ideas and pursuits

6) Members are generally accessible to other members in between formally arranged meetings

If there is a common spirit that all mastermind groups have, it is that there is no such thing as a bad idea. Whether groups are comprised of colleagues or peers, or perhaps more of a mentor/student type of relationship, the basic supportive nature of the group should remain the same.

Does this sound like the best idea you’ve never heard of? Maybe it’s because mastermind groups are not usually advertised; you’re not going to hear about them or be invited to join one by responding to an ad in the paper. Groups just kind of happen and they do because of the efforts of one or more of the eventual members. Why do these groups simply form, kind of like spontaneous combustion? Basically, each member must see the value in what the group can achieve together. Entrepreneurs, for all their great qualities and business vision, are still a minority among the general population. Because of this, the type of true support they need comes from other entrepreneurs and from those who are also committed to success!

Mastermind groups are a bit of an enigma because you just never know when or how a group might come together. It could start from a conversation between two people sitting on a plane. It could start between several colleagues who, even though they live far apart, respect the value of their association more than any travel hassles. The ideas and energy that can come out of such a group can be unbelievable! Respect what these groups can accomplish, value what they can do for your success, and just keep your eyes open! You never know when your own group of masterminds may appear!
